2005 Antarctic Scout: Benjamin Pope
Welcome to the Ice, as Antarctica is fondly known. My name is Benjamin Pope,
and as the Antartic Scout I have one of the coolest jobs on the planet.
Throughout my adventure, I had the opportunity to assist in a number of
National Science Foundation-sponsored scientific projects that include
biological, ecological, and geological studies. All of these projects are
conducting groundbreaking research and uncovering new and exciting facts
about our world every day.
An undertaking on the scale of the United States Antarctic Program requires
a massive support structure, necessitating a team of more than 1,000 support
staff. I also had the chance to work with many of them to better
understand what they do and to learn how valuable their jobs are firsthand.
Simply put, it was the adventure of a lifetime. To help share this experience
with you, I have posted pictures and journal entries from my time on the Ice.
Please check out the other sections of my site to learn more.
Yours in Scouting,
