A Tribute to Steve Fossett

The Boy Scouts of America joins with all Americans in mourning the loss of Steve Fossett. We offer our deepest condolences to his wife Peggy and the entire family.

Steve Fossett was an example to youth and adults alike. He challenged the limits and taught us all to dream big dreams and to have the courage to achieve them.

He was an extraordinary individual who reached for the highest goals. His life will continue to inspire Scouts of all generations.

An American Adventurer

As a Boy Scout, Steve developed an interest in adventure by climbing the mountains of the Golden State. "When I was 12 years old I climbed my first mountain, and I just kept going, taking on more diverse and grander projects."

  • Set 115 world records or world firsts
  • Holds official world records in five sports
  • Became first person to fly solo nonstop around the world without refueling
  • Circumnavigated the globe in both a yacht and a balloon
  • Competed in cross-country skiing competitions, Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, Ironman Triathlon and 24 Hours of Le Mans. Also swam the English Channel.

A True Boy Scout

 

Steve Fossett has always been supportive of the Scouts and attributes his motivation as an adventurer to his involvement in Scouting as a young boy. "I learned my values in the Boy Scouts, and I am proud of that. It was in the Scouts that I climbed my first mountain, and where I learned my leadership skills between the ages of 11 and 18."
